Clarendon Elementary School

Home/School Compact

As required by Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) the parents, the entire school staff, and the students of Clarendon Elementary School agree that this compact outlines how we will share the responsibility for improved student academic achievement and the means by which the school and parents will build and develop a partnership that will help children achieve Vermont’s high academic standards. This school-parent compact is in effect during the 2008-2009 school year.

School Responsibilities

We, the members of the Clarendon Elementary School community, will support your child in the following ways:

  1. Provide high-quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive and effective learning environment that enables the participating children to meet Vermont’s student academic achievement standards as follows:
    • Use of research-based reading series aligned w/ the Vermont State Grade Expectations.
    • Use of math curriculum series aligned w/ the Vermont State Grade Expectations.
    • Use of a science curriculum aligned with both National and State Grade Cluster Expectations.
    • Use of the Vermont Writing Portfolio instructional and assessment model aligned with the standards of both the National Council of Teachers of English and the Vermont Grade Expectations.
    • Use of the Vermont Math Portfolio instructional and assessment model aligned with the standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Vermont Grade Expectations.
    • Support of a low teacher-student ratio (especially in the primary grades)
    • Use of Highly Qualified Teachers and paraprofessionals
    • Use of Responsive Classroom practices
  1. Hold parent-teacher conferences during which this compact will be discussed as it relates to the individual child’s achievement. Parent Conferences have been scheduled for: November 6th and 7th, 2008, and March 19th and 20th, 2009.
  2. Provide parents with frequent reports on their children’s progress.
  3. Provide parents reasonable access to staff.  The staff is available for consultation and welcomes meeting with parents.  If you are interested in meeting with your child’s teacher(s) simply do one of the following:
  4. Call to set up an appointment (775-5379)
  5. Send a note in your child’s homework folder
  6. Send an email. All CES staff have email addresses. The address consists of the teacher’s first initial and last name followed by @rssu.org.
  7. Provide parents opportunities to volunteer and participate in their child’s class, and to observe classroom activities. There are a variety of ways in which parents can volunteer/participate at CES; for example:
    • P.T.C.
    • Field Trips
    • Monthly Community Lunches
    • Four Winds

Parent/Guardian Responsibilities

We as parents/guardians will support our children’s learning in the following ways:

  1. Recognize that I am the principle role model for my child. Good modeling can be achieved in many ways:
  • Monitoring school attendance
  • Read, write, and problem solve with your child
  • Establish a routine at home to support homework assignments
  • Show respect for self, children, and school community.
  1. Be involved in the school community by:
  • Volunteering in school activities
  • Participating as appropriate in the decisions relating to my child’s education.
  1. Stay informed about my child’s education and communicate with my child’s school by promptly reading all notices from the school or the school district either received by my child or by mail and responding as appropriate.
  2. Communicate with my child(ren). Some suggestions include:
    • Initiate conversation
    • Be an active listener
    • Ask questions about school which require more than a “yes” or “no” response.

Student Responsibilities:

We, as students, will share the responsibility for our academic performance in achieving the high standards set by our school and the State of Vermont in the following ways:

  1. Be a respectful member of the school community
  2. Do my homework every day
  3. Ask for help when I need assistance
  4. Give my parents or guardian all notices and information received by me from every school day.
